Your Ultimate Local Travel Guide to Hilton Head Island, SC

Beaches, Bites & Bikes: Explore the Best of the Lowcountry from a locals point of view with this Hilton Head travel guide.

Welcome to Hilton Head Island—a slice of South Carolina paradise where moss-draped oaks meet sugar-white beaches, and every sunset feels like a painting. Whether you’re here for a weekend escape or a long family vacation, this Hilton Head travel guide will help you explore Hilton Head like a local, aka ME! These are all of my favorite beaches, local restaurant and favorite bike trails on Hilton Head Island.

Top Beaches to Visit

1. Islanders Beach
One of my favorite, less crowded beaches! Lots of locals come here. With a “paved” path way to the beach, makes it easy to haul toys and chairs to the beach. It has updated restrooms too!

2. Burkes Beach
Less crowded and a favorite with surfers and kiteboarders. Great if you’re seeking a quieter stretch of sand with fewer tourists.

3. Mitchelville Beach
Off the beaten path, this historic beach near Fish Haul Creek is perfect for shell hunting and spotting wildlife.

Best Bike Trails

Hilton Head is a bike-lover’s dream, with over 60 miles of multi-use trails, making it perfect for bikers of all levels. Following this Hilton Head travel guide will ensure you find the best trails.

  • Sea Pines Forest Preserve Trail – Ride through marshes, boardwalks, and old rice fields. Keep an eye out for gators!
  • William Hilton Parkway Trail – A scenic ride along the island’s main artery, great for accessing shopping and dining with insights from this Hilton Head travel guide.

Local Tip: Rent bikes from Hilton Head Bicycle Company for great service and delivery options, recommended in this Hilton Head travel guide.

🍴 Must-Try Local Eats

1. Skull Creek Dockside – Fresh seafood, Lowcountry classics, and killer marsh views. Order the shrimp and grits, my favorite! You can catch a gorgeous view of the sunset while sitting outside on patio while listening to live music.
2. Java Burrito Co. – Organic coffee meets Baja-style burritos. A perfect spot for breakfast or lunch.
3. Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks – The oysters are a must. During the spring, soft shell crabs are in season and the soft shell crab sandwiches are AMAZING. Food and vibes are amazing, right on the water too! All shrimp, crab, and oysters are freshly caught. Go early to avoid a long wait.
